Области на научни интереси

Научните интереси и разработки на Николай Узунов са свързани с прилагане на ядрено-физични методи в биологията и медицината и в опазването на околната среда. От шестнадесет години професор Узунов е член на екип в лабораторията по радиофармацевтици и молекулярен имеджинг (LARIM) на Националните Лаборатории Леняро (LNL) на италианския Национален Институт по Ядрена физика (INFN), където се прилагат техники PET/SPECT/CT и се разработват нови методи за получаване на изображения от биообекти за приложения в медицината и в биологията. По идея на професор Узунов се разработва нов тип скенер за инфрачервени лъчи и за получаване на фотолуминисцентни изображения от наночастици, акумулирани в тъканите и органите на биообекти. Разработва и патентова нов тип сцинтимамографска апаратура, ръководител е на докторант за разработка на нов тип комптънова камера за изображения от гама-излъчващи радиофармацевтици. Взима участие в разработването на нов метод за производство на широко използвания в медицината технециев изотоп 99mTc чрез директно облъчване на мишена от обогатен 100Mo на конвенционален протонен циклотрон, който се използва за медицински цели (производство на FDG). В момента взима участие в разработката на процедурата за получаване на нов радионуклид 52Mn, емитиращ позитрони с параметри, близки на тези от 18F, но който да се използва за мултимодален имеджинг PET/MRI.

Автор е на:

1. Нов метод за определяне на енергията на снопове заредени частици от ускорители на елементарни частици;

2. На нови ядренофизични методи за анализиране на елементния състав на проби;

3. На нов сцинти-мамографски метод (the tilted-collimator method) за получаване на тримерни изображения от туморни обекти чрез използване на непдвижна гама камера;

4. Mетоди за сканиране на тумори в биологични обекти в близкия инфрачервен спектър на светлината;

5. На метод за контрол на ултравиолетовото излъчване от Слънцето.

Някои от изброените по-горе методи са защитени с патенти у нас и в чужбина.
